MALDIVES TUNA

Maldives tuna is the global benchmark for responsibly harvested tuna.

The fishing fleet operates using traditional pole-and-line and handline methods — selective fishing techniques developed in the Maldives over centuries.

These methods land fish individually, maintaining one of the lowest bycatch rates of any commercial tuna fishery.

These small-scale fisheries also operate with one of the lowest carbon footprints in the global tuna industry.

Big Fish is a vertically integrated processor of premium Yellowfin and Skipjack tuna operating within the Maldives’ regulated and traceable fisheries system.

FAIR TRADE

Maldives does not allow industrial fishing vessels within its waters, and restricts tuna fishing to artisanal boats (dhonis) owned by the island communities. All fishers in Maldives receive a share of the take from each trip, averaging 60-80% of export value - the highest anywhere in the world.
